What would be the right thing????
All right, some friends and I are arguing over what is the right way to do things, here is the deal....
Captain Matt and I always come to the bay by boat, usually bringing one other person. It is a 4 hour ride one way (8 hours roundtrip for you non-math majors). It costs us about $250 in gas and 80 bucks in docking. Some of our friends don't like the long boat ride and drive down instead, but they think they shouldn't have to pay any of the cost for gas, but they sleep and party on the boat, along with drinking our booze and eating our food. If I was rich, or even made over 30 g's a year I would not care too much. But they are able to come down and just throw in 15 bucks, which many times they don't even give one dollar, because they say that the boat would be there anyway, when the fact is it's not going to be because Captain Matt and I can't afford to split the 330 bucks for gas and dockage plus all the food and booze. (sometimes just the 2 of us go)
They still think they should not have to pay, even after we explained that the boat was more then transportation for us, it is now somewhere for everyone to sleep and party, and it keeps us from having to make reservations 6 months ahead, also, Matt and I also usually take a extra day off of work to get there early enough to get a spot on good weekends.
I told them to get a hotel room if they think they are being ripped off. They have never styaed at a hotel and think there is a motel 8 on the island they are going to get for 50 bucks on a big weekend. They are calling us cheap because we want them to throw in more then 15 bucks, not to mention they stuck me with the cart rental memorial day last year when everyone went.
I am not trying to be cheap about this and I am more than happy to make shots and pass out beers to whomever needs one, ,,,as I have done many of times, but some friends don't understand that they are lucky to go there and only have to pay 15 bucks, that is not how it works.
Now given, they have to spend the hour car trip in gas, probably 20 bucks round trip for 4 of them and the ferry fee, 22 bucks roundtrip, but they are still making out on the deal and get a practically free place to crash.
Are we being cheap or our my friends, let me know.
Thanks
Mister Kay
I will be there Memorial Day.
Sparty on.

Mister Kay, your "friends" don't know how lucky they are. Some rooms are going for $255/night on the weekends. They should be grateful and also buy you dinner.
You could tell them they could sleep in the park. That way, they're guaranteed a room!

Mr. Kay,
Here is how I see it, you are mostly right. I drive by myself from Cincinnati and meet Paul, Stu and the crew there 3-5x per summer and stay on his boat. If I stay 2 nights, which is usuallu the case I pay one night's dock fee's which is about $40 plus I make sure to buy my own alcohol as well as enough for some extra for whomever needs it as well as the ice for the cooler. In addition I also clean the boat every morning such as take out the trash, scrub the boat deck, and any other things that need to be done.
I guess it is a little different in that they don't drive the boat, but trailer it behind the truck. I would basically tell your friends they need to make sure they are providing their fair share of the food and alcohol to make it fair as well as pay ALL the dock fees!!

Most people have no idea about the expense of keeping up a boat. My boat has been making the trip to the Bay for New Year's every year for 16 years. If you have to ask somebody for money, leave them home. They are not Bay people. Just like anything else in life. Some people get it, some don't. Ask anybody who comes aboard if they have any idea how much gas the thing burns. Then watch the sticker shock!

Not a case of being rich. Just friends who are willing to share. Like I said if you have to ask, they don't go. The three of us who go every year put a kitty to start off with. Any and all expenses are paid out of the kitty. At the end of the trip we have all paid equally for the great time we all had. As far renting out at the dock, I'm not going there!

Ok, not that I should have any say in this considering I don't know any of you and i don't do the whole boat thing, but anywayz. I would think your "friends" should pitch in. If it was me, I'd feel bad if i didn't pay for something. Sounds like the cost of gasing a boat is a HUGE expense as it is. I'm not big on freeloaders and I feel that if you don't pay, then you shouldn't be included. At least bring your own alcohol or something!!!! Ok, enough said from Mrs. I don't know much about this topic!!!!! Hope all works out!!!
