(2019 Event) CHRISTMAS IN JULY IS NOT A SPONSORED EVENT THIS YEAR IN 2019 NOR WILL IT BE HELD AGAIN FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.
Island businesses used to go all out and decorate just like it was the real Christmas. Garland, lights, bells, and Santa hats abounded. Holiday drinks were on the menu at most of the local watering holes and island hotels and rental homes were filled to capacity. On Saturday Night, there was a traditional parade of Christmas floats that meandered through the downtown area and on Sunday the Christmas themed car parade excited and delighted island visitors young and old. Sadly, this tradition has ended. (2019 Event)
Put-in-Bay Trivia: Along the lovely shores of South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay), five luxury hotels were built by 1888. One of the hotels, The Hotel Victory is referred to as a symbol of the peak of the lavish 1890’s. Being the biggest summer resort in the U.S. at the time, the Hotel Victory was operating 27 years prior to being ruined by a fire on August 14, 1919. Today, you can still see the remains of some of the foundation and its swimming pool at the South Bass Island State Park.
